Dhaka National Medical College

Dhaka National Medical College is an educational institution in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was founded in 1925 as the Dhaka National Medical Institute which was then situated near Bahadur Shah Park.

Following the 1972 independence of Bangladesh, the educational function of the Dhaka National Medical Institute became moribund, although the associated hospital remained active. A medical college capability was restored with the creation of the Dhaka National Medical College. It was inaugurated on 15 October 1994 and was opened to its first students.

About Dhaka National Medical College

The Dhaka National Medical College one of the old health services organization in old Dhaka. It started its journey from 1925 when Non-Cooperation Movement of the Indian Sub-continent against the British Colonial Rule.  The First Governing Body of the Institute was formed under the chairmanship of a renowned scientist Sir Prafulla Chandra Roy. In 1994 – 95, the First Batch of Medical Student got admitted in the College. This year in 2014 – 2015, the 21st batch of a medical student will be admitted to the College. Now the college has emerged as one of the best medical colleges in Bangladesh.The College is Dhaka University affiliates the college. Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) has also recognized the college.

Course Offered & Affiliation

The college offers 5 years MBBS course approved by BM&DC leading to MBBS degree of the University of Dhaka. The College has been accorded permission of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh & is affiliated with the University of Dhaka and recognized by Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council & also enlisted in WHO Directory of medical institutions.

Goals & Objectives

The goal of the college is to produce competent committed caring and accountable doctors who will be able to lead the health care sector as leaders to full fill the growing need of the community.

 Campus

The campus of the college is located at 53/1, Johnson Road, Dhaka – 1100, in the heart of old part of the Dhaka City near Bahadur Shah Park and opposite to Dhaka Judges Court of the historical on a 2,308 Acre land.

Many educational institutes like Jagannath University, Dhaka Collegiate School, Kabi Nazrul Islam Govt. College, Mahanagar Mohila College, St. Gregory School, Govt. Muslim High School, Banglabazar Govt. Girl’s School, Paukage School are around the college.

The college campus has got two parts:

1. Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital and Doctors residential quarters.
2. Dhaka National Medical College building & students hostel.

Hospital buildings

Seven storied old hospital building was built in 1982 and a six storied new building in 2009 with total 650 beds. The hospital has well equipped operation theater, laboratory for investigation, out-patient departments, doctors and nurses resident quarters.

College building

At present 11 storied building with 14000 sqft. floor space in each floor. Total floor space 154000 sqft. with centrally air conditioned and 24 hours lift services. The college building has administrative sections, 8 departments, library, 5 lecture galleries, large examination hall, one conference room, one seminar room, one teachers lounge, male & female students common rooms. The departments in the college are: Department of Anatomy, Department of Physiology, Department of Biochemistry, Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Department of Community Medicine, Department of Forensic Medicine, Department of Microbiology, Department of Pathology, Teachers Room, Tutorial Room, Practical Laboratory and Museum. A separate fully air conditioned Anatomy Dissection Hall of 6,000 sqft. is also present in the department of Anatomy.

Library

The library is located in the 6^th floor of the academic building and has a collection of over 5000 bound Volume of text books, references and journals in various subjects and provides up to date information to the students & teachers. It has user – friendly access system. The library is provided with separate reading area for the students as well as teachers. The students can also borrow Textbooks for reading at college and home. The Library is also equipped with internet access.

Clinical Teaching & Training

The Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital is the designated teaching hospital of the college. It has a 650 bedded multidisciplinary hospital complex adjacent to the academic building.

The other Govt. teaching hospitals are also used for the teaching & training purposes includes Chest Hospital, Cancer Hospital & Institute of Psychiatry & Infectious Diseases Hospital. Transport is provided to the students for this purpose.

Following successful completion of First Professional MBBS examination, students are placed in different departments/units of the hospital for clinical training and ward – duties as per roster suggested in the BM&DC curriculum. Transport are provided to carry the students from the college to different primary healthcare centers and back as part of their clinical.

Faculty

Academic Faculty in both College & Hospital now consists of 179 full – time members, blend of a distinguished body of academics with proven teaching & research excellence and younger professionals with varied experience.

Academic Performance

The academic performance of the students of Dhaka National Medical College in different Professional Examinations under the University of Dhaka is highly satisfactory. A total number of 1188 Medical Students of 16 Batches passed Final MBBS Examination from the Dhaka National Medical College. Many of them completed post graduation degree in medical science. Now there working in home and abroad with fame.

Student’s Welfare Committee

This committee is entrusted to look after the different academic & extra academic activities of the students. These include annual sports and cultural week, annual picnic & different literary competitions, publication of Annual Magazine etc and religious activities. This committee comprises of teachers and students of the college.

Student’s Advisory Council

The members of this council are entrusted to advise the student’s on their individual collective problems related to academic & extra academic affairs. Any student may approach this council for advice. Each and every students is placed under this council in groups to be guided in their professional courses immediately after admission. Mainly this council guides the students regarding their academic studies and the matters relating to professional courses. This committee consists of teachers of this college.

Disciplinary Committee

This comprises of members from Governing Body and teachers which looks after the disciplinary activities of teachers, students and staffs. Any sort of activities & incidents that are detrimental to the academic atmosphere of the college this committee is empowered to deal with it.

Foreign Student

25% seats are available for foreign students. In this regard we follow the rules and regulations laid down by the University of Dhaka, BM&DC and the Directorate General of Health Services, Govt. of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh.
